Wicked Little Letters

The film is based on the true story of a little remembered scandal that occurred just over 100 years ago in the ‘genteel’ town of Littlehampton.
A barrage of obscene letters were sent to respectable townsfolk; one declared ‘you are a sad stinky bitch’ and another – ‘you stink of common shit’! A culprit was arrested and a trial ensued, followed with delight by a nation still reeling from the Great War.
The film stars Olivia Coleman as Edith, a church-going spinster who still lives with her overbearing father (Timothy Spall) and her pious mother (Gemma Jones). Jessie Buckley plays a neighbour, who is superb as a ‘fiery’ single mother from Ireland.
It contains lots of bad language, which some may find shocking, but at times it is a broad gutsy comedy, with lots to enjoy, not least the excellent acting.
