The Roses is a fun and funny update of The War of the Roses from 36 years ago. Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers (he’s an architect, she’s a part-time culinary artist), they have a loving marriage and two great children.
However, beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life in California, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.
Anyone who remembers the original will appreciate the subtle twist of this war’s end. But The Roses has no trouble standing on its own.
Sharply written, nicely paced and impeccably performed, it’s a winning adult comedy that finds big laughs inside some all too familiar modern foibles.
