The Color Purple is a story of love and resilience based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel, and the 2005 Broadway musical.
The story centers round the life of Celie, as she goes from a girl in 1909 through the 1940s in a racist US South, with the horrors of incest, cruelty and domestic abuse. However, this musical version sugars the pill and softens the blow, and takes away some of the shock of violence and tragedy of the novel, and tilts the experience more towards female solidarity and triumph over adversity.
It harnesses a smart blend of gospel and blues, big band, jazz, and even tap-dancing showtunes to lift the characters, and the audience, to their feet.
