Kate Blanchett plays Lydia Tár, a world-famous conductor, of a major German orchestra, about to record Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. We meet her at the height of her powers, as she is being interviewed by Adam Gopnik of the New Yorker (played by Gopnik himself). “Her life looks beautiful, the flat she shares with her wife (Nina Hoss) could be an Art gallery, her jets are private, and her wardrobe is exquisite”.

However, it soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems, who is Tár, really? As the plot unfolds, the film becomes “as tense as a thriller”, and “doesn’t drag for a single second”, driven by Kate Blanchett’s “electrifying” performance.

“The genius of Tár lies in the way that the film-making echoes the treacherously seductive and mercurial nature of its central character”. Kate Blanchett has already won a 2023 BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her performance in Tár.
