Past Lives is a Korean film about an inevitable and yet impossible love (in the style of Brief Encounter).
Nora, a Seoul-born playwright live in New York with her husband, when her childhood friend, Hae Sung, ‘comes crashing adorably yet painfully back into her world’.
The film then jumps back in time to when the two are 12-year-olds in Korea, and vow to marry one day – but are separated when Nora and her parents emigrate to Canada.
Past Lives is an immigrant story, with Nora bisected between 2 cultures, but it’s themes of destiny and ‘the pull of the past’ are universal; and above all it is a romance.
