Brian and Charles is a very British film about an eccentric inventor and a ramshackle robot.

Brian (David Earl) lives in a remote cottage in the Welsh valleys, where he spends his time developing mad-cap inventions. Brian finds an old mannequin head on a rubbish site and a washing machine body, then puts together a quirky-looking robot, that he calls Charles.

The film manages to make you believe that Charles is a sentient being with a rather quirky appearance. Brian thinks it’s best to keep Charles (who grandly adopts the surname ‘Petrescu’) a secret from the locals, and so the pair spend their days playing darts, cooking cabbages, riding bikes, having pillow fights and watching TV travel shows that give Charles a wanderlust to visit places like ‘Hono-loop-loop’.

However, all too soon electronic adolescence dawns and Charles starts to resemble a stroppy teenager, albeit one whose tiny head looks more like that of an eccentric professor, with a wayward manner.

The film is about loneliness and the power of friendship. It is really touching and yet has moments of slapstick comedy. ‘Its mixture of sweetness and silliness is wonderful’.

NB – it is worth sticking around for the Charles Petrescu rap that is nestled away at the very end of the film.’
